Only a few things are as captivating as the soft light and glow of a candle. But there’s an art to burning a candle properly and safely.
You generally can tell if a candle is burning properly, just by looking at it.
Follow these tips and tricks to be burning your candle like a pro!
Before you light your candle, always remove any décor or tags.
For ongoing use, check for any debris left in the wax pool such as wick trimmings or matches.
Any debris will add more fuel to the candle than it’s designed to handle. Too much fuel can cause the flame to unexpectedly flare up or even start a small fire near the candle flame.
Make sure to trim your wick to 5mm above the wax line before lighting your candle for the first time.
#1 tip to having a long burning, safe and clean candle is to trim your wick before every burn.
Did you know, your candle will burn up to 25% longer if you trim the wick every couple of hours? Yes... It's true!
Wicks that are left long or crooked can cause uneven burning, dripping, flaring and sooting.
Trimming wicks will;
Help prolong the life of your candle
Help avoid black soot on your candle
As each Koa Kandle is individually handmade, each candle will be unique in the way it burns.
I reccomend not to burn your candle for more than 2 hours at a time.
Sometimes you may notice white spots on the sculpture or glass of your candle. This is known as frosting. Frosting is a perfectly natural effect of using natural vegetable waxes. When your candle has frosting, it is a sign, it is made using only natural waxes. It does not, in any way, impact the performance of your candle.
Sculptural Candles are known for all their unique shapes and sizes. These shapeshifting candles have different burn patterns from one piece to the next.
Once lit, they can take a path of their own. This is why it’s extremely important to place your candle on a flat heat-resistant plate or candle dish before you spark it up.
Using a candle dish, will collect the wax drippings.
Just like the first cut is the deepest, that first burn is the most important!
Candles should burn one hour for every 2cm in diameter of the actual candle size.
For example, a candle that is 4cms across should burn for 2 hours.
If a candle does not burn for long enough to allow the wax to liquefy or to melt from edge to edge of the container, it will create a “memory ring.”
Once a candle has a “memory ring,” it will only burn to this line for the rest of its life. This is referred to "tunneling" in the candle world.
Burning a candle for too long will cause carbon to collect on the wick, leading it to “mushroom.”
The wick will then become unstable and produce a dangerously large flame. Plus, your candle will start to smoke and release soot.
Avoid this by for 2 hours at a time.
In general, it is recommended that candles do not burn for longer than four hours and cool for at least two hours before relighting.
There’s a special beauty and tranquillity to candles, but a lit candle is also an open flame, and a potential fire hazard if not carefully monitored.
Never leave a burning candle unattended
Always remember to blow your candle out when you leave a room.
Never burn a candle on or near anything that might catch fie.
&
Make sure to keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
When there is only 2cm of wax, it is no longer safe to keep burning your candle, and it’s time to retire.
If you have a candle from the classic glassware collection, you can scrape the remaining wax and use in your oil warmer for 0 waste.
Use hot soapy water to remove any excess wax & reuse your glassware as a new addition to your home. Maybe as a; g&t glass, shot glass or salad
bowl, a statement table vase, a chic toothbrush holder or even
a pen holder on your office desk.
Follow these tips and tricks & you will burn candles like a pro!
